If you are asking this question, I think the definitions on Wikipedia and on other resources haven't satisfied you. Thus if you are really interested in Internet and other nets, I highly recommend you to read "Computer Networks" by Andrew S. Tanenbaum. I've already read about 1/5 of it and, from my point of view, it's definitely a masterpiece: consistent narration, perfect explanations, great amount of knowledge and even author's sense of humour.
