Reinforcement Learning

Question

If you go to the section on this website about Machine Learning, then types of Machine Learning, you will see a small paragraph about reinforcement learning. It says about how a machine is exposed to a dynamic enviroment & how it learns to play a game against an opponent or drive a car by a reward system. My question is, how does a Machine get rewarded? Humans & animals are easy, usually food, money or sex. But Machines?? Someone please enlighten me.

`Reward` is a formula.

after each generation, the `Performance` is calculated, and the best performance remains.
