Please which is the best programming language to learn for someone having plans of going into software engineering?

I have heard many people saying you need to learn a lot of languages if you are going into that career and I just want to know if their is any major languages to learn in other to get the best from that career.

It's good to learn C/C++ to understand how does things work (memory, stack/heap, pointers/references, etc) But there is a way to skip it and learn Java/C#... if you don't want to spend some time to learn fundamental ideas (may be you'll be ok to learn them a little bit later after you'll become knowledgeable in other languages basics)
