Good Question! It is really hard to answer. The big difference between the 2 language is the philosophy behind them.
In Perl, the language gives you a bunch of stuff, a lot of times one line of code can solve really hard problems! The philosophy is that there are various solutions for every problem, you can find what suits you the most. But with this power a lot of programmer can't deal with. (As uncle Ben said: Great power-great responsibility) If you are in hurry, you won't write clean code, and as time passing by even you won't understand your code. But there is the thing that Perl is faster in most of the cases (I don't know any case yet that python was faster in something than Perl).
In Python, the base philosophy is that if there is a problem there is a solution, and you can easily find it. The 2 biggest advantage for me in python is that it supports JVM , Java objects and you can write only clean code, doesn't matter how much time passed you will understand it if you read it back. And it also matters a bit that, the community is as I experience bigger, better, and also the language is much easier to learn.
So it's up to you, which to use! I personally like python more.
