How does the challenge reward system work?

Ive noticed that I typically will earn more xp (or take less of a hit when I lose) when challenging those higher than me in rank. on the other hand challenging those lower in rank typically only reward 1xp (though not always the case) but if I lose take a hit for like 25 xp. is this based on the amount of xp earned by the user in that specific language?

Base is 32xp, altered by a difference between your xp in a given language and that of your opponent's. Plus a newbie bonus (effectively for xp under 1024) and another bump-up for each correct answer.

Note: Xp doesn't depends on the status of player but depends on the particular language.
