How many MBs are 1 GB? 1000 or 1024?

I always knew that 1GB = 1024MB but then I found google digital storage units translator and when I entered 1GB it returned 1000MB. Can anyone explain this?

The actual definition of 1 GB was always 1000 MB. GiB ( gibibyte ) is the one that means 1024 MiB ( mebibyte, also sometimes mibibyte ). It just never caught on. People just use GB to mean both all the time even though it's not really correct, even in official cases, which is quite annoying. Like I believe windows always used 1024 as the definition, but recently switched to 1000.

I think 1GB equal 1024MB in general, because it just like 1 MB means 1024kB and 1kB means 1024 bytes, as following binary calculation method. That's all I know Thanks
