Malicious hacking -> Illegal, is used to cause harm and steal sensitive information for bad purposes.

Grey hat hacking -> Usually Illegal, is used without consent, to find vulnerabilities in system security for non-malicious reasons but still may be considered bad by the organization as it's done without consent.

But hacking skills are somewhat necessary to test your own code for security vulnerabilities.

Same reasons you should test your code with various inputs to make sure it always gives correct results and does not crash.
