Start with determining what is more attractive for you - web design, mobile applications, databases, scripts, etc.

Whichever you choose, I'd recommend starting with a scripting language like Python, Ruby or JavaScript -- all of them are good for the beginning and help you to understand programming concepts before you start deciding on your specialization.

Visit projecteuler.net, perfect for improving programming skills. I recommend you to learn Python first.

If you already know Java a bit, stick with it. Language is not important.
