It's free as long as you publish Open Source projects, if you want to make private projects using Github's repositories... you have to pay :3

Github is mainly a place when you can learn trough Source Code, but it is much more than this and my advice is use Google for get more information about it. ^^

GIT is a must-have skill for developer. I think it would be great idea to launch that course here. Instead of github, I recommend you gitlab with charge free private repositories. I also highly encourage you to check Michael Hartl tutorial "Learn enough GIT to be dangerous". I found it very usefull!
