Is machine learning part of artificial intelligence or is artificial intelligence part of machine learning, and why ?

although the above is not strictly precise :) Machine learning is using statistical/mathematical computations to work out predictive models - either extrapolating values or classifying labels. That *can* be used in AI, but also in many more applications.
