Most of the time you have to protect yourself against bot and lamers. Do not directly expose your website, Web application or Web service using a reverse proxy in a dmz, and make accessible from the Web only the port your product listen (for instance 80). implement protection against ddos and ids, chroot all of your environment and keep all of your systems up to date. Test your website with some tool (there are lots free), find out a company which hacks systems for business and let them test.
If you do it this way, maybe (and I repeat maybe), you could consider your website safe, at least for a while
