Who was the best programmer you ever might, and why?

Question

1) Who was the best programmer you ever met?
2) Why were they the best programmer in your view? Their personality? Their intelligence? What was it they did to earn that badge of honour.

I knew someone who went on to be the lead developer of The Human Genome Project:

They often won coding competitions, and even earned money from winning some VERY difficult competitions, that led to moving the field of computer science forward! They were good at hacking systems too (White Hat). He could work on any system he came into contact with, it was almost as if he was born to be a coder... his intuition for systems was off the scale.
