At this point do not worry about the definition of a markup language.

For html files they need to be saved as a .html file.

if you use Word, I believe it would be saved at a .word file.

So use notepad instead.

- then save as .html

Because Microsoft Word will add aditional formating to your code.
You need a text editor that can treats your code as plain text.
Word won't do that.

As it was mentioned above. Word adds additional information to its own proprietary work file format.

.word is made to be viewed by Word
.html is made to be viewed by Web Browsers

.word is made to be opened/edited in Word
.html is made to be opened/edited in any simple text editor

Notice that viewing and opening are two different things. You can open a JPEG file with a text editor but you won't be able to view the image. Hope this helps.
