The language was initially called Oak after an oak tree that stood outside Gosling's office. Later the project went by the name Green and was finally renamed Java, from Java coffee. Gosling designed Java with a C/C++-style syntax that system and application programmers would find familiar.

In some places of the United States there was a slang called "Java Coffee". Which was not necessarily a cultivated coffee from Java island, it was a jargon for "strong coffee". Ok, you may know who is Gosling, right? So he and his m8s were needing a name for their new language (Java). Then when he asked "What makes you excited?" they replied "Java Coffee!". Referring to the strong coffee, they all laughed. That's were the name come from.
