Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in);

int num = sc.nextInt();

List<String> l = new ArrayList<String>();

for(int i = 0; i < num; i++) {
l.add(sc.nextLine());
}

Example:

5 // number of characters
A
B
C
D
A
