There are a few things I want to toss into this conversation. 1. Do not bid on projects that you cannot do a fantastic job on. Your clients expect you to be an expert, not a beginner. Whether it is logo design, web design, or whatever, they hire you because they want something done professionally. 2. One of the great keys to success is getting clear requirements. Make sure you understand exactly what they want and why. Then show them your progress as often as possible so you can correct your understanding as you go. Keep everything in writing. Many times they will change the requirements as you go. You need to be able to charge for the additional time. You can only do that if you can clearly show that the requirements have changed. Note: If you misunderstood the requirements, that's a mistake, not a change. Mistakes are on you. Changes are on them. Clear requirements and change management keep you in alignment with the client. 3. Scams - One area that I've not experienced myself, but someone I know has. They hired him to do some work then put in for a refund saying they didn't like his work. That destroys his reputation on the platform. They do this to avoid paying for services rendered. They can give payment in full, collect the work, then dispute it. So try to get them to say in writing that this is exactly what they wanted before you close a project. 4. I have made more money in the maintenance phase than on the project phase overall. Always look at what you can offer in a maintenance agreement for a customer and attach limits to that. What I did was said all bug fixes are free. Minor patches are free. Changes and major updates required to maintain future compatibility are not included, but are offered at a discounted rate. I never promise a certain number of hours for free because they always try to use those hours. 5. If you cannot do a certain task well, hire another freelancer to do it for you. It's okay to have help.
