How come javascript challenges are so difficult?

The lessons are a breeze, basic and very clear, but the challenge questions are incredibly cryptic. Thoughts?

update: after diving in Ruby and breaking my head with C++, javascript seems a little more logical. An important point in the challenges is to NOT waste time wondering "Why would anyobdy write it that way?" but instead accept the convoluted nature with this language with so many layers, it has to be written that way sometimes...
