Usually, previous experience in the field covered by the job offer, beats any certificate you might have. Certification processes are expensive and have developed internal mechanics that make them less reliable than they aim or advertise to be. Any job offer asks at least tot years of previous experience as...... Specially if certificates are mandatory, their value (pysical and implied)is even lower. Unless you have a background proving your skills, forget about aiming at the big job opportunity through certification or you risk to spend a lot of money for nothing. If you feel lucky and you want to try anyways, don't spend additional money: your luck will assist you also without certificates (unless they are mandatory). I might be wrong, but I've been living in a certificates world for a long period (10 years but not about programming) that helped me shaping my 2 cents opinion.

Personally, I think that it's satisfying to know that you are taking the right steps towards your goals. Although, getting certified is does not make you better than those who are not, but I think when you win a competition you'd want a trophy.
