If you want to be a good programmer, I think having a basic understanding of math is necessary.

If you are not going to get into graphics coding, I would say basic math (no calculus) would be sufficient. Like I said, the better at math you are, the better at coding you'll be. In my opinion, of course :)

I think basic understanding is the very base minimum for being able to program effectively.

For happy, you need not to know mathematic "in the mind" like for exam. It;s enough to read a required mathematic method or formula in some matehmatic book, understand and rewrite into program code.
