5)Java is very easy to read

6)Java can create webpages called applets though javascript is in common use now

So by learning java one can actually learn a lot using little effort and the eligible code makes coding a breeze

but it used to be & is famous today up to some extent because-
when java came it has a good feature called WORA
due to that its demand skyrocketed & many more people learned it. also it has good documentation which makes it easy to learn for beginners &. hence many college/school also teaches this initially. Now again as more people know this they use it in their professional life.
But java is not that good its more about market strategy than real work in todays life.
