Think of a project you want to build and start working on it. When you get stuck do research. I started building a text based RPG in C++ a while back seemed easy but I learned a bunch.

When you're done here, go to Google and begin to search for additional resources on your topic. Read as many things as you can on it, and obtain various perspectives on it so you have many means of going about something.

codeacademy.com They have different courses on different languages.I would recommend beginners to start there.
