What do you can do? Practically, everything.

With python you can create a lot of scripts for your operating system ( I love do that).

You can create desktop programs that runs every where. Linux, Mac, Windows and many others.

You can create any kind of web page with powerful frameworks and libraries.

You can do scrapping to websites that you need to do.

And a lot of more fun things like Hacking networks (most of that kind of thing are doing using python).

Python is a very easy to learn and efficient programming language used in several ways, including app development. I personally would recommend python3 over python (aka python 2) because it runs faster and is more widely used.
It is also good for storing and recalling data.
