I wish to pursue data science and/or bio informatics I belong to medical field which languages should I pursue?

I have started with python also basic statistics and plan to learn R and SAS basic. but how do I know I am on right path? i also plan to learn SQL? how do I become efficient in programming? I am 38 years old kindly advice.

My advice stick with one programming language either python or R. one of them is enough. start from the end. think of a project you want to do and go learn about how to do it.
