To boost your morals , I am 54 of age and have a mechanical degree, retired presently.
I am hoping to become a good programmer very soon. :-) .
You are a young man in comparison ,and have a much better chance if you apply yourself.

Man, it all comes down to the level of your determination and self-discipline. You definitely have a different learning pattern now, being mature and experienced, than you had 20 years ago.

Fortunately, the logic of code changed slightly if at all during all this time ;) There are some cool new languages now which are really easy to comprehend. So many web tutorials you can take sips from...

Not knowing much about Java, I made a simple "Simon says" for Android (still not my kind of fun, but worth a shot ;)

It is definitely doable. Just ask yourself if you have the time to spend :)

The best answer is yes, but you should do some research on the most efficient point of entry into the industry you want to enter.

For example, the blockchain technology industry is booming and as many people are integrating the blockchain with new technology, you might find it less saturated and challenging to get involved. This would mean you could jumpover other languages and focus specifically on the ones that would most benefit you in that market Python, Unity code for gaming and so on.

I know some will say you have to learn this first and that first and I am also sure there were people that told Jimi Hendrix he needed formal training and to stop playing his guitar upside down and backwards.
